Pintle Hitch

Considering using a pintle hitch? That’s great but you have to be careful. These types of hitches are great for maneuvering trailers around and make it much easier to drive over bad ground but at the same time they will give you a rougher ride. Not to mention the hitch its self needs to be secured properly or else it is likely that it will disengage while you are taking the back roads.

The hitch itself is very straight forward and some people choose to attach it themselves. However, it would make better sense for the trailer experts to do it for you because this is one of those hitches than can create a disaster. You don’t want to be one of those people on the news who lost control of their trailer and ended up with vehicle and trailer rolled over on the side of the highway. So the extra money you spend at the dealership will definitely be worth your while, as much as I dislike most dealerships.

Many people will use the pintle hitch for their campers when they decide to take it out to the back 40. Slow and easy will allow you to go through some pretty crazy terrain with a trailer on the back of your 4x4. Some people attach regular trailers for the purpose of hauling gear, wood, or toys but for that purpose I really recommend using a hitch hauler instead. Knowing the hitch and what you are using it for is important.

This leads me to another point. Most trailer related accidents happen because the person didn’t obey the trailer and vehicle weight restrictions. You often hear of people who packed the inside of their trailer full which pushed them a ton over their limit and then failed to stop at a red light and T-bared an innocent person on their way to work.

The pintle hitch itself is not only for slow bumpy terrain but it can be used for long hauls as well. Just keep in mind that the ride isn’t going to be the same as a regular long haul hitch. All the more reason to make sure everything is secured properly.

You might have a large truck and can’t find a good reason to take the camper full of stuff and would prefer something else. For you I recommend that you look at cargo racks and carriers. They range from roof racking to box carriers that are able to keep your stuff safe and secure. However some of the installation on these can be quite complex so again it is best to let the dealer or trailer people take care of it.

That is the pintle hitch. I hope you take the time to figure out how it will be of use to you and how often you will use it. Remember to keep within your limits and slow down on the road. You’ll get to your destination intact that way.
